Shoshana McCallum has never been a stand-up comic. She’s also never been a sex worker.

But the Auckland-based writer and actress has combined those careers for Stand Up Girl, her debut web series that kicks off on WatchMe today.

It follows Jan, a sex worker played by McCallum, who falls into stand-up comedy after accidentally ending up with a microphone in her hand during a night out with friends. Jan starts using material gleaned from her day job to fuel her night job, with her risque material quickly becoming a hit.

McCallum realises her show – which includes bad-taste jokes and sexual references – is likely to be controversial. But she believes Stand Up Girl addresses some important issues.
